An established company run by an experienced professional

Why I became a mediator

My first career was as a criminal barrister working for the Crown Prosecution Service.  I enjoyed a varied career working as a local prosecutor, in the policy unit in the London HQ as a prosecution team leader, and finally running a prosecution unit. I have 18 years personal experience of managing people and workplace conflict.

An opportunity arose to train as a mediator , i seized this, and I spent a couple of years as an internal workplace mediator within the CPS while I was Head of the Prosecution Unit. I found mediation effective but also satisfying and rewarding.

By the end of 2009, I was enjoying mediating more than prosecuting, and decided to leave the CPS and set up Mediation in the Workplace Ltd.  It was a leap of faith but I have never looked back.

My Philosophy

"We cannot solve problems by using the same kind of thinking we used when we created them."  Albert Einstein

Every conflict is unique

The starting point is always a conversation so I can understand the people, the circumstances and the organisation; these are different every time. We can then explore potential options that meet the needs of your particular case. My focus is on helping you to find the best way forward whether that is working with me, or not.

One step at a time

It is tough being in conflict! Many are fearful of taking steps to address it in case it makes it worse. I understand this and my approach is to be impartial, to recognise how challenging it may feel and to help individuals to engage and move forward at a pace that works for them.

Believe in the individuals

I believe most people want to do a good job and work well with colleagues but sometimes this gets derailed. Taking the time in a safe and confidential space to help someone understand what led to their conflict, the impact it is having, and exploring options for resolving it, is often all it takes to move forward.

Follow on support

I love to see the relief people experience at the end of a mediation when they have felt heard, understood the other person's perspective and agreed a way forward. Equally important is ensuring that the individuals have the support they need to help them.  I always explore any potential barriers to maintaining the success of the mediation.

Testimonials

I have had the pleasure of working with 100s of people over the last 20 yers, here is what a few of them said.

Compassionate

’I felt that the day was very constructive and undertaken with fairness and dignity for both of us. I would recommend the use of mediation for any member of my organisation and hope that it becomes more available in the future.’

Skilled

I am back from my holidays, and I have just looked at the agreement. I think it is a fair and reasonable summary of discussion points. I wanted to say thank you for listening and understanding. It was a difficult process made easy by your incredible kindness and competence.

Thank you so much.

Professional

I completed Sarah's mediation course. It was simply excellent.  I thoroughly enjoyed her teaching and group facilitation. From clear explanations of key concepts and the use of professional actors, through well-constructed role play scenarios to detailed and personalised constructive feedback.   Highly recommend.
